The American Buff Goose is considered the only truly American Goose.  It was likely crossed from a European goose -no one really knows its origin- but the end result is a fowl that is truly unique to our country.  Still listed as an endangered breed, the American Buff is a remarkably calm, mid-sized, goose.  While all geese are noisy by nature, this particular breed is more sing-song than constantly complaining and alerting.

Our flock of American Buffs are from Holderread stock.  We have been building our flock for three years and can attest to their very hardy, very vigorous nature.  We move our flock in rotation after the sheep within the paddocks we define each season.  With moveable shelters and electric fencing we have found this breed to be an outstanding addition to our rotational system.  While it is most often stated that geese -especially this breed- are entirely vegetarian, we have found that the American Buff is a prolific parasite/larve/bug eater and have very much enjoyed its place in our rotational system.  Our geese are prolific layers and our ganders are serious guards and sires.

The American Buff is a very slow recovery breeder and we have learned to appreciate a patience as it finds its way.  Our little troupe have become noisy, wonderfully fun friends.
